Freshman Choir

Course Description
:† Freshman Choir is a Class C, non-auditioned, mixed choir of ninth-grade students.† The Freshman Choir performs as part of the curriculum for all major concerts at WLA, WSMA Concert Festival, and chapel as occasion permits.† The goals of the course are (1) to help the student understand the vocal gift that God has given them, (2) to encourage the student to use their gift to God's glory singing both sacred and secular choral literature, and (3) to prepare the student to join either the Viking or Traveling Choirs.

Viking Choir

Grades: †10, 11, 12
Full Year Course: †1.0 Credit
Prerequisites: †None
Course Description:
† Viking Choir is a Class B, non-auditioned,† mixed choir of sophomores, juniors, and seniors.† The Viking choir exists for those students in grades 10, 11, and 12 who want to sing, but donít have the time commitment or vocal ability to perform with the Traveling Choir.† The Viking Choir performs as part of the curriculum for all major concerts at WLA, WSMA Concert Festival, and chapel as occasion permits.† The goals of the course are (1) to help the student understand the vocal gift that God has given them, (2) to encourage the student to use their gift to Godís glory singing both sacred and secular choral literature, and (3) to prepare the student to join Traveling Choir.

Traveling Choir

Grades: †10, 11, 12
Full Year Course: †1.0 Credit
Prerequisites:† One year of WLA Choir (either Freshman or Viking)
Course Description:
† Traveling Choir is a Class A, auditioned, mixed choir of sophomores, juniors, and seniors.† The Traveling Choir performs as part of the curriculum for all major concerts at WLA, WSMA Concert Festival, and chapel as occasion permits.† In addition, the Traveling Choir travels to the churches of the WLA Association on Sunday mornings throughout the school year to sing Godís praises in worship. The goals of the course are (1) to help the student understand the vocal gift that God has given them, (2) to encourage the student to use their gift to Godís glory singing both sacred and secular choral literature, and (3) to prepare the student for collegiate level choral music.† Auditions are held each spring for the following yearís choir roster.† Transfer students may inquire about auditions with the director.

Band

Grades:  9-12

Prerequisites:  Teacher Approval of Enrollment
Course Description:  The Viking Band is unique because it is by nature curricular and co-curricular. The educational foundations are the rehearsals held during the school day. A Co-curricular aspect is present in that some rehearsals, concerts and performances are held outside of the school day. Students have opportunity to grow personally in their music education through a variety of ensemble and individual opportunities offered to them through the band program. In turn, students of the WLA Viking Band use their musical talents to serve as an ambassador of music for the WLA Association churches and schools and the Fond du Lac community at large. The band strives to use God's gift of music both sacredly and secularly as we witness the love of our Savior to all we come in contact with.

Course Description:
† Music One is a general music course for the student who desires a non-performing music class.† Music One explores the wonderful gift that God gave us in music.† The student will learn the building blocks of the music language including notation, rhythm, style, and form.† The student will then use these building blocks to study the main periods of music: Renaissance, Baroque, Classic, Romantic, and Twentieth Century.† The goals of the course are (1) to help the students understand the musical gift that God has given them, (2) to enable the students to use their gift to Godís glory appreciating both sacred and secular literature as well-educated members of an audience, and (3) to prepare the students to continue to enjoy music in their adult years.

Music Theory

One-Semester Course:†† 0.5 Credit
Prerequisites: †Permission of the instructor
Course Description
:† Music Theory, the capstone course of the WLA Music curriculum, strives to teach the advanced music student how Godís marvelous creation of music works through both theory and composition.† The student will have daily assignments in a self-paced theory workbook and daily composition assignments to put the theory into practice.† Students will learn to use notation software (Finale) through tutorials and composition assignments.† The culmination of the semester is the ability to compose a four-part hymn.
